The Meesh PR Update 06
Where we talk about influencers vs. content creators, advocates and knitting.
Welcome to Issue 06 of the Meesh PR Update! I’m starting this issue from the beautiful and amazing NYC Chief clubhouse. (And yes, I started this issue literally a month ago.) While I unfortunately didn’t work in corporate long enough to qualify as a member, I have many friends who do and I’m lucky enough to be invited for events and coworking dates. Something I’ve been doing a lot lately is just having coworking dates with my friends who WFH or are freelance – it’s a great way to get some quality time with a beloved friend while also getting some work done. We always feel like we’re back in university, in the dorms or each other’s rooms getting homework done!
Also, maybe it’s just me (or the Fool’s Spring we’re currently experiencing) but I’ve been so positive and optimistic this week. There’s been this overall feeling of good things coming – for me, my friends, my clients – just everybody in my life. I went from having sporadic work (but tons of time to destress and knit and network) to having more clients and constant work and prospective calls! It’s been a whirlwind of a year, and it’s only still February! So, I want to say thank you to everybody who has recommended and advocated for me – you’re so important and seen and I appreciate all of you. It’s so important to not only have friends and mentors and a support system, but also advocates – those who will fight for you to be hired or be part of their team because they know you’re the best fit. The people who share your name (positively!) in a room when you’re not there. Without advocates, it’s really hard to get your foot in the door – because in 2025, who you know gets you through the door, and what you know keeps you in the running.
Anyway, Happy Spring! How have these past two months felt like two years? It’s been insane how short yet long these days have been feeling. A topic that’s been popping up more often in my conversations lately is the need for influencers versus content creators. (Do I usually instigate this? Yes. Because it’s a fascinating topic and I want to talk about it.)
When I first started in public relations, influencers were brand new – we’re talking about the Bag Snob/Bryanboy/Tavi Gevinson era for fashion. Celebrities were still the best brand endorsers – and wow how things have changed in the past 10 years. We’re now inundated with self-claimed influencers, ranging from micro to macro – but are they really all “influencers?” Back in the day (I feel old now) we called them influencers because they influenced. It was like the Taylor Swift effect – people saw it, bought it and sold it out. But how many influencers in 2025 are actually influencing? Not many, IMHO.
That’s why I always bring up this topic when chatting with prospective and current clients – are you looking for influencers to move the needle or content creators to help make beautiful content that you can repurpose? In my opinion, the best talent agencies will tell you who on their roster is better for what – as would the right PR and social people. There are so many “influencers” out there now, especially over multiple platforms – so know your goals when talking about influencer strategy. Do your research. Look at engagement, not just at follower counts.
Also, having budget helps. A lot. Ok, back to destressing by knitting and watching insane vertical Chinese dramas. (My new guilty pleasure.)
Community Spotlight
I met Nikisha Bailey at The Ned two years ago at a breakfast she “hosted” – and I’ve been slightly obsessed with her ever since. She’s one of the most epic and coolest people I’ve ever met – worked in the music industry for ages, consults in the music industry, goes to the Grammy’s every year, is a university professor, and then she started a coffee brand highlighting beans and farmers from the African diaspora! Because REPRESENTATION MATTERS. And it’s called Win Win Coffee because there should always be win-win situations! Like, how awesome?! (Also, her coffee is DELICIOUS. And this is coming from someone who is so NOT a coffee person anymore.)
If you’re in Philadelphia, Win Win just partnered with Two Locals Brewing Company to create an absolutely delicious stout so go and enjoy a pint (or two)!
I Have Thoughts On…
The attack plans that were shared via Signal. I swear, every day I wake up wondering if we live in a simulation because HOW IS THIS REAL LIFE.
The first-of-its-kind endometriosis treatment pill has been approved in England! This could be a massive game-changer and I’m excited to keep up with this news.
Meghan launched a ShopMy. I have many thoughts about this, but I respect her making moves and getting her bag!
Napster might be making a comeback? I don’t pay attention to anything web3 or metaverse (although I should) but this headline caught my eye.
Recent Things I Loved (or just caught my attention)
My friend Tiff Knighten was quoted in this fantastic article about how much influencers get paid – it’s 100% worth a read.
Nathan Jun Poekert’s newsletter is always a must-read, but this new issue on the new CPK rebrand is perfection IMO.
Eunhyuk’s solo debuts Explorer & Timescape have been on repeat nonstop this past month. (Do I understand anything he’s saying? No. But the vibes are great.)
I’ve been making a variation of this savory soy milk for breakfast (whenever I’m home long enough to do it) but Ho Foods does a brilliant Taiwanese breakfast-for-two deal Thursday - Sunday!
