The Meesh PR Update 02
Where we talk intentionality, networking and TELETUBBIES.
Welcome to Issue 02 of the Meesh PR Update! I’m writing this from the Luminary during a fantastic coworking session with one of my favorite people – Anna Medaris (an amazing writer) – after a jam-packed two weeks of fantastic events, coworking days, workouts and quality time with friends & family.
I truly admire all the community builders planning these incredible events and facilitating meaningful connections – especially the ones creating these communities as a side project. But after meeting all those amazing people, having wonderful experiences and learning so much, I need a day or two to be antisocial, so I’m off to my brother’s place to rest and recharge. (But if you’re in the Philly area, please reach out if you want to meet in person as I’ll be there for about a week!)
Intentionality has been a common theme in recent conversations – how do I intentionally network, connect with others, choose what events to attend, etc. I’ve been aiming to do more things with intention – for example, going to smaller events where I would more likely genuinely connect with someone rather than a massive free-for-all networking event. The advice “PR is all about who you know, not what you know” is true to an extent, as you never know who in your Rolodex will be needed in the future. However, a full Rolodex is worth nothing if people have forgotten who you were because you connected with them at an event and called it a day. (It’s also worth nothing if you don’t know how to actually do your job.) Be intentional with your connections and grow those relationships into meaningful ones.
I’ve also found that sometimes people and brands forget about intentionality and relationships in their strategies. Reposting viral content and following trends are not social media strategies, they’re tactics (and not always great ones). Churning out press release after press release over insignificant news (to the public and maybe even your stakeholders) is not a press strategy – it’s a tactic, and not my favorite one. Find ways to bring value to your stakeholders so that they want to continue supporting you.
Community Spotlight
Dwarmis is one of my favorite fashion brands to follow – not just because she’s a talented friend, but because everything she does is with intention. As a Latina-founded brand, Dwarmis makes it a priority to work with Latinx talent – manufacturers, models and photographers. She also intentionally designs smaller capsule collections, focusing on quality pieces, and makes everything locally to ensure sustainable practices. She also constantly shares behind-the-scenes for her collections, from design sketches to manufacturing.
Some of my favorite pieces are the Carmen Top (I love an interesting cutout) and the Cora Skirt (I love fun button accents).
I Have Thoughts On…
Women will soon learn about their breast density post-mammogram. I think this is so great and will allow people to learn more about their bodies – after all, dense breasts are high-risk factors for breast cancer, but who knows if they have dense breasts?
Girls might start puberty earlier because of chemicals found in common household products like soap, detergent and perfumes. I hate this so, so, so much. Also, how is musk ambrette prohibited in the EU and restricted in Canada, but still widely available here? (Not classified as generally safe, but still available.)
Cops opened fire in a subway station OVER A FARE EVADER. I’m sorry, but WHY WERE SHOTS FIRED OVER A $2.90 FARE. Two bystanders were shot and one is in critical condition because he was SHOT IN THE HEAD. I literally… have no words.
Instagram is launching Teen Accounts – I’m excited to see how this affects teen mental health and online privacy, and I’m hoping all the updates will be positive. Especially since it seems like every teenager has social media and is basically addicted. (Millennials/early Gen Z might be the last generation to grow up without any social media!!)
The dye in Doritos can make mice transparent. Fascinating. My only question is how did this experiment even come to be?
The Chase money glitch situation on TikTok – HOW DID PEOPLE NOT KNOW THAT WAS FRAUD. I am so confused. Have people stopped watching (or rewatching) Catch Me If You Can? Can we swap out high school calculus classes for financial literacy classes?!
Recent Things I Loved (or just caught my attention)
People are ditching dating apps and using hobby apps, run clubs, a dating wall and pineapples. I love this so much – meeting new people in real life is so totally back! This also highlights how much people are craving true connection and community – and what better way than connecting over something you both already like?
The Tellytubbies TikTok is AWESOME. It’s my new favorite TikTok account.
Tall Poppy recently opened and it’s going to be so hard not to treat myself to a croissant post-Barry’s now.
My friend Lola is starting a new membership community for dynamic, multi-dimensional women!
